My Teacher is a Wanna Be Diva…

My Teacher is a Wanna Be Diva...

Last Thursday and Friday I took a business writing class. Specifically, "Business Writing that Counts." It was an interesting couple of days. Thursday was so much more interesting that I had to take notes to keep track of all the silliness that kept happening. So, before I get into the story, let me preface this by stating the fact that I try and take a business writing class every couple of years. It keeps management very happy with you. It looks and sounds good as well. So, whenever I take another class I immediately regret the fact that I am putting myself through more self inflicted misery. It's for the good of my career, I tell myself over and over...

Thursday morning started out the same as many others. I got to work early so I could get some work done before class. Not that I have that much to do, but meeting minutes won't get written unless I am the one writing them. So, I had already been at work for over an hour when I left to go to class. I was a little wired that day anyway, probably because I was up early and actually working on stuff. Class was a bit of a let down, but I tried to sit quietly and get though it regardless.

Why she's a diva:
I sit next to the training team that puts together this class. It is really entertaining to hear what they have to say about a teacher before you go and sit in class. This particular teacher gets paid $500 a head. Knowing that, here are some things she apparently can't do:
  • Plug in her own computer
  • Take attendance for her class
  • Buy her own water
  • Open her own water bottles
  • Unplug her computer

She also apparently forgot her manners when she decided it was OKAY to take a phone call during class. Seriously. During class she decided to take a phone call. I don't really care WHY, even if she felt she had a good reason (she was meeting someone at lunch) you don't take calls when you are the TEACHER.

All of this was before lunch...

During lunch, I decided to go to the beginning of my group's holiday party. This was probably a mistake, but I passed one of my co-workers on her way out and she looked so forlorn I joined her. We headed towards the restaurant and I tired to fill her in on my wacky diva teacher, but she wasn't really paying attention. I figured it was a lost cause and gave up. We caught up with a couple other ladies from the group we were joining and headed into the private dining room.

First off we ordered cocktails. Yeah! Drinks at lunch totally rock! Especially when you are in a class you aren't enjoying. Unfortunately, they only ordered seafood appetizers, so I wasn't able to temper my cocktail with food until I had finished the cocktail and taken my lunch with me back to class. It was very interesting. For a holiday party it was so muted and understated, I was relieved to leave. I felt sorry that my co-worker had to stay.

The afternoon was pretty boring as well, except for the fact that I was suddenly tipsy and kept laughing at everything. Oh, and we had a fire drill! That totally rocked as the Diva got completely upset. The strobes went off a second time and she actually sent someone in the class to see if there was something they could do to make it stop.

Okay - have to work a little - more later...
